This book has everything except…

I am finishing up an audio book (that shall remain nameless) and have to say that this author has spared the main characters NO tragedy or conflict.  It’s gotten to that point that I’m listening more to see what new tragedy will crop up and not to see how the book ends.

In six audio discs, the protagonists (twin high school students) have met:

  • incest
  • a horrible car accident that takes the life of a family member
  • sexual abuse at the hands of their father
  • alcoholism (father’s)
  • drug use (both twins)
  • binging (one twin)
  • purging (the other twin)
  • absent mother
  • an almost-date rape (one twin)
  • teenage drinking (both twins)
  • cutting (one twin)
  • sexual promiscuity (one twin)
  • a deep, dark family secret (alluded to in every chapter)
  • suicide attempt (one twin)
  • teacher seduction (one twin)
  • girl fights (both twins)
  • extra-marital affairs (father and possibly mother)
  • paternal grandparent abandonment
  • father possibly sexually abused by his father
  • bondage and prostitution (for drugs) (one twin)
  • truancy

See?  Everything EXCEPT the kitchen sink!

And though I’m not done with the book, I have a sneaking suspicion that the deeeeep, dark family secret is that one of the twins was actually killed in the car accident, and the surviving twin is now a split personality, living lives of both twins.   So we can add that to the tragedy tally.

I still have an hour of listening left and can’t wait to see just how much more dysfunctional this family can become.  I peeked at the Amazon.com rating of this book–4 stars–and have to wonder if I’m just too cynical to believe all this tragedy could befall one family.  I’ll let you know how it turns out…

I shouldn’t laugh after reading the whole list of tragedies but really?? There is nothing left to do but laugh. If your twin theory is right, then I wonder if this was written before or after The Lace Reader.

oh, and my dead twin theory was spot on. the surviving twin is indeed suffereing from a split personality.

Definitely too much tragedy for me. Sounds like a bad soap opera.

Though, I hate when what is supposed to be a surprise, twist ending is actually so predictable.
